Membership
You – like a lot of other people – are interested in knowing more about bluebirds in Florida. That shared interest led a group of
individuals to create the Florida Bluebird Society, a statewide organization which has as its goal the conservation and protection
of bluebirds and all federally protected cavity nesting birds in the Sunshine State. The Florida Bluebird Society is a 100 percent
volunteer organization. All membership dues and contributions are used to carry out the mission of the Florida Bluebird Society.
The
Florida Bluebird Society hopes to achieve its goals through educational programs and the collection and dissemination of pertinent
information. Putting out bluebird nest boxes is good; putting out bluebird nest boxes in the most efficient manner and monitoring
them regularly is better.
Increased knowledge and conservation means there will be more bluebirds in Florida. Loss of habitat
and the spread of non-native invasive bird species (house sparrows and starlings) have a severe detrimental impact on bluebirds. Educating
the public about these threats to the bluebird population is critical. However, bluebirds have been known to thrive in areas where
people put up and actively monitor the proper nest boxes.
Unfortunately, much of the available bluebird information available
does not pertain specifically to Florida, which is unique because of its shape, which stretches so far east and west and north and
south, and has a significant impact on the diverse habitat. One of the main goals of the Florida Bluebird Society is the creation
of a user-friendly conduit for the exchange of information for people who put out bluebird nest boxes in the Sunshine State.
As
a member of the Florida Bluebird Society you will be invited to participate in the annual meeting and help shape the future of the
Society. You also will receive decals to display your interest in Florida’s bluebirds, a discounted membership in the North American
Bluebird Society, and a discount on purchasing mealworms.
Just as importantly, you will be able to join the forum of bluebird
enthusiasts, where questions are asked and acknowledged and information shared.
